For centuries the people of God have gathered together around specific truths.

Denominations and organizations have been formed to unite these groups of Believers. Having common belief systems (see footnote 1 at bottom) has helped to build unity within particular groups and define their purpose. Historically these groups were formed from people who were usually newly saved, or were asked to leave whatever denomination they were previously a part of.

Unity based on common doctrines has a measure of success. But there is an inherent problem with this approach - unity of this nature is based upon uniformity. When God is saying something new (see footnote 2 at bottom), those who are listening are usually asked by their leaders to leave the group they were a part of (see footnote 3 at bottom). Their newfound convictions and beliefs are considered threatening and divisive.

If the whole group doesn't move in step with what God is saying, there will be a break in fellowship. When agreement in nonessential beliefs are considered necessary for fellowship, then division is natural and to be expected. While doctrine is vitally important it is not a strong enough foundation to bear the weight of His glory that is about to be revealed through true unity.

Change is in the Air

There are major changes in the "wind" right now. For the last several years people have started to gather around fathers instead of doctrine. In the natural, it would be easy to imagine a father with two very different children - one politically liberal and the other conservative. While discussions would probably be quite lively at the evening meal, they would not bring an end to the family.

Gathering around fathers gives a stability that enables people to endure differences in opinion without falling under the influence of the spirit of offense. Fathers bring an element of peace that is impossible without them.

Spiritual Fathers

Apostles are first and foremost fathers by nature. True fathers continually make choices for the well-being of their children with little thought to personal sacrifice. They are not jealous when their children succeed, but instead are overjoyed because of those successes. It is normal for a father to desire his children to surpass him in every way. Brothers compete, fathers do not.

In the same way that a father and mother are to bring stability to a home, so the apostles and prophets are the stability of the Church. The Apostle Paul calls them the Church's foundation (see Ephesians 2:20). Good foundations bring stability. The concept of team ministry starts with these two. Stability is the primary fruit of the ministry of the apostolic team.

Team Makeup

Apostolic teams are not necessarily made up of just apostles and prophets. They are a group of people that carry the "family mission" without selfish agendas. They are sent by their leadership, and entrusted with delegated authority to establish God's rule in their realm of experience and expertise. When they go with that heart, they carry an apostolic anointing because they function under the umbrella of the apostle's authority.

We can't be co-missioned until we're in sub-mission to the primary mission. This is true of every Believer before God. But it is especially true of apostolic teams. Setting aside personal agendas is a big part of the success of team ministry. Many teams have failed in their mission because of an individual who wanted his/her gift or opinion to be recognized.

Measure of Rule

A big misunderstanding occurs when apostles think they have the same measure of authority in every geographical location. When Paul went to Jerusalem to participate in the first Apostolic Council (see Acts 15), he submitted his experiences to the other apostles who had also gathered there. It wasn't until James the apostle in Jerusalem spoke that there were any conclusions.

A true apostle carries their apostolic authority wherever they go, but it is foolish for him to not recognize local authority. The same is true with apostolic teams. It is their respect for the local Church and the Biblical authority that helps them to serve effectively.

Authority, like favor, is for the benefit of others. It is not a title to help in building one's own self-esteem, and is never for personal gain. For that reason, the Apostle is at the "bottom of the stack"...the "least of all." The title simply recognizes function. And that function is to make others better and more complete in their walk with the Lord.

The Purpose of the Title

Throughout history, there have been many ordinary individuals who have become desperate for God in unusual ways and have sought God with reckless abandon. The encounters they had with God made them appear extraordinary. Their breakthrough made them household names with remarkable gifts and ministries. But when God gives someone an unusual gift, it is never for the purpose of acquiring admiration and fame, or even drawing big crowds. Those things are normal byproducts, but they are not the purpose.

The place of favor that one gets as a result of God's unusual touch on their lives is a God-given position to equip others. It is God's heart to take those high points of human experience in the man or woman of God and make them the new norm for the Believer. Equipping the saints becomes the focus of true fathers.

The Spirit of Revelation

One of the things that helped to keep the early Church strong and healthy was their continual devotion to the apostles' doctrine (see Acts 2:42). However, you'll notice that there is no mention of a list of beliefs that the Bible declares to be the official record of important doctrines. It is safe to say the "apostles' doctrine" is referring to something other than a specific list.

Peter understood this when he exhorted the Church concerning "present truth" (see 2 Peter 1:12). That phrase is to direct our attention to that which the Lord is emphasizing for this season. That is the apostle's doctrine. The word coming from apostles is to bring clarification of the Father's focus for the Church, and in turn strengthen our resolve to His purposes. Fresh revelation carries fresh fire, which helps us to maintain the much needed fire in our souls.

Apostles carry a blueprint in their hearts concerning the Church and God's purposes on the earth. They are used to bring fresh revelation to the Church. Apostolic teams are sent to represent their spiritual father, and carry the word that has been entrusted to their "tribe." They help bring an understanding and establish an order needed in the particular location they were sent to.

The Need for Others

God never gives the whole picture of His plan for the Church to one father/apostle, or even to one tribe. Scriptures declare that "we" have the mind of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:6), not "I." Dependence upon the whole is essential for us to grow up in a way that pleases Christ. As the various "tribes" learn to work together we will see a more complete picture of the Father's intent for planet Earth.

The revelation carried by Apostles and the five-fold ministry will result in a Church coming to a common knowledge of the Son of God (see Ephesians 4). Much division presently exists in this area. He is our common focus. A study of the Scriptures without the Holy Spirit giving understanding creates much religious conflict. Division exists because people are committed to different levels of truth that appear contradictory.

Fathers are necessary to sort these things out. Variety without uniformity is important. These teams carry revelation to help the Church to live out of a common revelation of Jesus - who He is and who we are because of Him. God's aim is to fulfill His word in 1 John 4:17 - "As He is, so are we in this world." We are to become like the Jesus revealed in Revelation, Chapter 1 - resurrected and glorified. We are not headed for the Cross - we live "from" the Cross. Apostolic revelation has that in mind.

The Day of Power

One of the more notable prophets of our day recently told me that he wouldn't be able to come into all that God had created him for until the apostles came forth to their appointed place. The apostles help release the prophets into their destiny, and vice versa. In a sense they complete each other.

Apostolic order without apostolic power is to be questioned. Order based on Biblical principle that is lacking Biblical power is tragic at best and deceptive at worst. Order does not exist unto itself. The wineskin exists for the wine. The wine is the focus. All order exists to house God Himself - not to restrict Him, but to accurately express Him.

Wineskins need to flex in order to be useful, because of the expanding nature of the wine in the fermenting process. The Holy Spirit brings constant change and to house Him means to embrace flexibility as a way of life. The goal is not to create a perfect structure or government. It is to create one that recognizes Him, and flexes with His changes.

Last Days Assignment

All of this serves one purpose - Jesus is returning for a Bride. For this to happen, the harvest must be brought in and must be "cleaned." He's not returning for a Bride that He has to heal up and put together like a puzzle in Heaven. He is returning for a Bride whose body is in equal proportion to her head, and whose parts work together in coordination. It's called a "glorious Church, without spot or wrinkle" (see Ephesians 5:27) in Scripture. Anything less is an illegitimate vision.

The Bride is to make herself ready for that day (see Revelation 19:7). As Larry Randolph puts it, "It is a perversion to think that Jesus will dress the Bride before the wedding." Our assignment is clear, and the gifts are in place. And they are all expressions of Jesus Himself. But they are simple in purpose. Represent Jesus to the world!

The fire of God must rest in the souls of men. Christians without passion are almost as great a mystery as Christians without purpose. Apostolic teams carry fresh fire with divine purpose. They enlist men and women to God's dream, and in the process the Church steps into her destiny.

Footnotes:

1. There are three basic levels of Biblical doctrine. 1. There are doctrines that are essential to the Christian faith – for example, Jesus is the eternal Son of God. 2. Then there are doctrines that are important, but not essential – for example, how we use the gifts of the Spirit in a church service. 3. And finally, there are doctrines that are good but not essential – for example, the exact nature and timing of Christ's return.

2. This is never in addition to Scriptures, instead He unveils what is already there.

3. This is far from an absolute rule, as many leaders are in tune to what God is saying. However, some are more concerned with preserving past accomplishments over and above the advancement of the Kingdom. This creates a weakness that tends to miss God's present word.

Exodus 14,11-12:
They said to Moses, 'Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt...It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!

Self-Pity Must Be Surrendered

Perhaps we might safely say that the Israelites were a grumbling lot, prone to outbursts of self-pity. But before we point a finger of accusation at the Israelites, I wonder if we might need to remove a plank from our own eye first?

There was something comforting about the past that the Israelites preferred at this point to the unknown dilemma of future freedom. It would seem they were so afraid of the unknown that they might even have been willing to settle for second best and remain in an oppressed lifestyle rather than face the trial of exodus.

I have found that self-pity must be surrendered to God during a radical healing journey. One of the most effective ways to destroy the habit of feeling sorry for one's self, is first of all to focus on God and perhaps read aloud a favourite piece of Scripture that inspires you. Then purpose to think about other people; it could be someone you know is facing a difficult situation or perhaps an item on the news headlines has touched your heart.

Why not turn your personal pain or disappointment into an opportunity for empathy-fueled prayer and action on behalf of someone in a less privileged or more acute situation than your own? It works every time! We are blessed to be a blessing.

It is essential to let go of the past if we are to move into new vistas and future potential of liberty in Christ. Even though our enemy will use fear of the unknown to overwhelm us and cause us to lose courage, we must endeavour to maintain a bold faith in the face of adversity.

Standing and Stillness in Warfare is Strategy

Exodus 14,13-14:
Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still.

Sometimes all we can do is stand. Paul taught us that in warfare, "standing" is a strategy against the schemes of the enemy (Ephesians 6:10, 14). Standing with God is like Holy Spirit super glue - it binds you to the Lord and His purposes and releases Godly determination in us to finish the race no matter what. When we stand firm, God enables us to overcome our enemy in His truth. We quickly discover in spiritual skirmishes that God's authority is truly indisputable and the enemy must bow the knee to the King of kings.

God said that the people would never have to face the enemy they faced that day again. In other words, the battles we win today remain future victories. By faith we can maintain ground taken without having to fight the same battle twice. Furthermore, we do not need to revisit old wounds: what God has healed, He has healed.

Self-examination can be helpful to assess healing progress but ongoing introspection has no place in a people whose focus is the Lord. Once in a vision I saw a sign that said, "No fishing" beside a deep pond. I knew God was telling me that He had completed an aspect of healing in my life and that I didn't need to go back and cover old ground.

We note that Moses exhorted the people to "be still." It is a beautiful truth of knowing God that resting and trusting in Him are not passive, but rather they are active aspects of our faith walk. Trust is about having faith in God to bring forth what is not yet seen, it is about saying, "I believe."

When we feel exhausted from the battle, it is comforting to know that God will fight for us when we don't have the energy to fight for ourselves. God will also cause other brothers and sisters in the faith to rise up on our behalf. This isn't an excuse for us to be lazy, but it is a grace-blessing our Father asks us to receive by faith.

When a child hurts themselves it is a natural compassionate response to reach out to help. As a mother, I cannot help but put my arms around my little ones when they weep from pain. A holy hug can work wonders when we are in need of healing. In like manner, God's presence wraps itself around us as a comforting blanket and embraces us.

A Time to Stand, a Time to Move, a Time to Reach Out

Exodus 14,15-16:
Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.

There is a time to stand and a time to move and we must learn to recognise the seasons both individually and corporately. If we don't discern a new season with God's instruction to "move on," our past has then the potential to be used as a "crutch" - meaning it remains a familiar comfort zone and a possible stumbling block to the new things God has for us.

I met a lady on a plane journey once who had a hand painted walking stick. It was one of the loveliest walking sticks I've ever seen. Throughout the flight I engaged with the lady in discussion and she told me that she was in continuous, severe pain. Eventually I asked her if she would like me to pray for her leg to be healed in the name of Jesus. She stared at me with disbelief and said, "No thanks." I asked again, hoping she might change her mind but she became defensive and slightly irritated.

In response, I remained quiet and chose to respect her wishes. I closed my eyes and prayed silently. The Lord broke into my thoughts and He said, "My child, some people prefer the comfort of pain, the attention it brings and the lifestyle they are familiar with than choosing to trust Me. Some people, like this woman, use pain as a crutch, rather than choosing to be healed in My loving arms." I was deeply saddened that this dear woman missed the day of her visitation. God's words caused me to meditate deeply.

When God was healing me of many childhood traumas, I used to sometimes miss the numbness my soul experienced. Pain and misery have a way of imprisoning us and swallowing our identity up in sorrow and depression. However, I am so glad that God gave me the tenacity to push beyond my human limitations and to sustain a place of security in covenant relationship with Him.

Being delivered from fear was one of the greatest healing experiences I have had with Jesus. It truly set me free to be a woman of faith! It meant surrendering past traumas, wounds and great gaping tears in my soul to His wonder-working Blood. He has healed me of each pain-filled memory, word, assault and atrocity.

When we give the Lord access and invite His presence into areas of trauma in our lives, it acts as a divine catalyst for healing. When God heals us, He does so perfectly and with nothing missing. Beloved child of God, I encourage you to pursue your healing until you are made whole in Him.

God's authority raises itself as a banner of victory over our circumstances, situations and any and all intimidation and enemy assault. We must do our part, like Moses, in learning to exercise our God-given authority over our circumstances. Moses raised his staff, thus exerting God's authority, commanding what stood before God's people in the natural environment to be aligned with Heaven. He then stretched the staff out as a gesture of faith in action.

Similarly, we have to do our bit to engage by faith and believe God's authority will deliver every area of our lives into total freedom. In this way we will experience Kingdom transformation and acceleration of destiny! God bless you today and may He pour out a special healing blessing upon you for His glory.

Let's Pray:

Father God, we repent of our laziness, compromise and sin, and ask You to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Holy Spirit, we give You access to all areas of our lives and we step into our God-given authority and command all oppression and bondage to be broken off our lives. We reach out in faith to receive the fullness of our destiny in Jesus' name. Amen.

Yours in His love,

Isaiah 37,3:
"...for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth."

If that promise from God hasn't been fulfilled yet, don't panic, instead:

Stay On the Main Road

Psalm 16:11 says, "You will show me the path of life..." In John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, clear instruction was given to stay on the road. Why? Lions were along the pathway, but they were chained just far enough away from the path that if you stayed on the road they could not reach you. Leave the road just a little and you were a meal.

Once, my mailman almost got devoured by a neighbor's vicious dog. The dog's teeth were about to go into his arm when a man came out of the house and called the canine off. The dog should have been on a chain. To the obedient Christian, satan is on a chain. The devil is roaming about "seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Jesus is the path (see John 14:6). Every town has a Main Street, every Christian has one also...stay on it. Many look for shortcuts.

Avoid "Sightseeing"

Someone said, "You can look, but don't touch." This is bad advice. There is much visual distraction today. It's easy to be lured away into worldly thinking (see 1 John 2:15) and be deceived by the enemy by (continually) looking at something that is beneath a Christian's dignity. What you allow yourself to see will dictate what you think (see Job 31:1).

Many of us know the Scripture that says, "For as he thinketh in his heart..." (Proverbs 23:7). But the verse right before it says "Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye..."

What are you looking at? You've heard, "If you hang out at the Barber Shop long enough you are going to get a haircut." If you allow your eyes to see things they shouldn't, you will eventually wind up doing it. Satan gives a very bad haircut, and in the long run it will turn out to be an expensive one (see Proverbs 13:15; Judges 2:13-15). Don't have a bad hair day.

Don't Look Down

Never once in Scripture are we told to look down. We are always told to look up (see Luke 21:27). When troubles come upon us, we often do not want to look up (see Psalm 40:12). Some are so wrapped up in self-pity, it causes them to exaggerate how bad the problem really is and hinders them from seeing the door of escape (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). Dwelling on the bad, they focus on the current trial and not the ultimate good as the Scriptures tell us to do (see Philippians 4:8).

You may be experiencing a temporary trial now, but it's nothing compared to what He has for you in the future (see 1 Corinthians 2:9). Many Believers miss God because of negativity...don't join them. The Father is looking from above...turn your gaze toward Him, not your problem.

Proof that you're looking up? Thankfulness to God (see 1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Live in the Garden of Purity and Desperation

Too flippantly some mumble, "Jesus died for my sins," and then go about committing sin. This is the reason some promises do not come to pass (see John 5:14; 8:11). God can bring solutions to our problems, but He does so by first solving a deeper problem - sin.

Some seem to forget the sinfulness of sin (see Isaiah 3:9). Resisting sin is not always easy, but it is possible (see James 1:12-16). Stay pure (see 1 John 3:3). Personal purity brings God's blessings (see Psalm 18:20-21).

Jesus cried out, "My heart is ready to break with grief" (Mark 14:34 NEB). The next verse says "He threw Himself on the ground and prayed." The last prayer Jesus prayed before going to the Cross - He prayed while flat on His face. Often, the fulfillment of God's promise in your life comes only after you've thrown yourself down before God and prayed in utter desperation.

Are you desperate for God? Hezekiah was desperate (see Isaiah 38:3-5) and his life was extended. "God is faithful..." (1 Corinthians 1:9a)...so remember:

God's Delays are Not Denials...Hold On, the Promise Will Come

Paul said it in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, "Faithful is He who calleth you, who also will do it." If God gave you a genuine promise, He will fulfill it - but keep in mind He rarely takes the shortcut to get us to the next destination (or the scenic route). Sometimes God leads us into the wilderness on the way to blessings. When we face trials we need to bow down before the Master (see Isaiah 66:1-2), and He will strengthen us to keep going on until the promise "is ready to be fulfilled."

God's timing is always perfect (see 2 Samuel 22:31), but you must keep feeding and nurturing His promise with the Word, prayer, and thanksgiving no matter what comes your way and no matter how long it takes. Be patient and wait on Him. If He has carried you this far, He is not about to stop now.

Some prophetic words may not fully come to pass because (as preposterous as it sounds) people get impatient and try to help God out. They get antsy and want to give God a hand. God doesn't need your help; He needs your faithfulness (see 1 Corinthians 4:2). Yes, we do work with God, but we must remember that He is the One who promotes and demotes along with opening doors and closing them (see Psalm 75:6-7).

Bottom line:

If you want His word fulfilled, stay on the main road, avoid sightseeing, look up and stay pure with your faith focused on Him.

Psalm 27,14:
"Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD."
