The prophet's wilderness. What a subject. May this writing help steer and stabilize developing prophets! Though I will address mainly prophetic persons, these concepts are relevant on some level to all Christians.

THE PROPHET'S WILDERNESS

The desert experience, or wilderness, is God's mandatory prerequisite to the prophetic calling. A prophetic person never looks worse than while he/she is in-desert; and, he never looks better than when he emerges as gold, mature in character and ace in prophesying. Even though all Christians experience certain desert seasons, the prophet's wilderness is unique in that it is typically longer in duration and broader in revelatory production.
Biblically, the desert is constitutional to prophetic identity.

Moses stumbled upon the burning bush and his prophetic calling in the desert (Ex 3:1-10). David blossomed in his desert strongholds, writing many of his psalmic prophecies while there (1Sam 23:14). Elijah, when overcome with despair, ran to a prophetic fetal position--the desert (1Ki 19:3,4). John the Baptist championed the prophet's wilderness, living there in seclusion for extended seasons and even years (Lk 1:80, 3:2). Jesus, the promised Messiah-Prophet, willingly resorted to desert places (NKJV Mk 1:45, Lk 5:16). Though desert places can be dry and wanting, maturing prophets come to find a safety there, a place where their intense and introspective disposition can find relief and equilibrium in God (Ps 55:6-8).

The wilderness forces dependence

A prophet's greatest enemy is himself, not Jezebel or religious crustiness or a satanic nemesis. Giftedness has greater power to lure a person into prideful self-sufficiency than the Deceiver himself. Many profoundly gifted prophesiers have shipwrecked their lives and ministries through such self-reliance or gift-reliance, drifting away from daily dependence on Jesus Himself. Such prophets are runaway trains racing toward a head-on collision with humbling and reckoning.

The desert is a place of lack, whether it be relational, social, ministerial, financial, or some other personal need or want. Though God ultimately intends to fill what is lacking, He will not do so until every semblance of self-sufficiency and self-dependence is burned, baked, crushed, stomped, and obliterated by the heat. The burning desert sands will scorch our pridefully calloused feet until, at last, we break and fall to our knees in permanent dependence on Him. Hosea 13:5: I cared for you in the desert, in the land of burning heat. God uses the desert to become our Caretaker, melting away our "I can take care of myself" sickness. We will only come up from the wilderness when we are sufficiently leaning on our Lover, not our self or our gift. See the symbolism in Song of Songs 8:5: Who is this coming up from the desert leaning on her lover?

The wilderness cultivates intimacy

Hosea 2:14 tells us God uses deserts to cultivate intimacy with us: I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her. The prophet's temptation is to become so intercoursed with his gift so that he forsakes sweet intimacy with the greatest Gift of all, our First Love Jesus. The greatest commandment is not, "If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it" (Ro 12:6); it is, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength" (Mk 12:29,30).

Just as God will not allow self-sufficiency, so also He will not allow us to intercourse our souls with anything above Him. Like David, He will keep us in that desert stronghold until we are daily singing and writing romantic psalms to Him. Like Israel, He will allure us into the desert until we cherish His tender whispers, until that voice becomes the central focus of our daily life and emotional well-being. Until personal intimacy is greater than prophetic ministry.

The wilderness acutes spiritual hearing

Deuteronomy 8:2,3 tells us the desert trains and sharpens our spiritual hearing, making us acutely accurate in perceiving God's voice. Hosea 2:14 says God "speaks tenderly" in the desert, and Psalm 29:8 says "the voice of the Lord shakes the desert". Luke 3:2 shows us how prophetic messages come to the prophet in the desert. God loves to open up and talk in deserts! Consequently, we learn how to hear Him.

You see, in the desert key blockages to perceiving God are dealt with and removed. Loud negative emotions are faced, resolved, and silenced. Competing dreams are shattered, leaving us blank and receptive to God's dream. Comfortable patterns are disrupted, exposing misleading voices that spring from routine. Anytime our soul and body are afflicted by lack, our spirit rises to attain the voice of God to sustain our total being. During extended or repetitive deserts, the Christian becomes keen in perceiving divine communications and movements. Since correct spiritual perception is the essence of prophetic ministry, God will bake His prophets in deserts until their perceptive blockages are melted, until prophetic purity with no mix is reached.

The wilderness transforms character

Prophetic power captivates to such a degree that character problems can be obscured and overlooked. Christian history is stained with almost-prophets who shipwrecked their lives and ministries through egocentrism, emotional mismanagement, pernicious habits, wildfire appetites, unhealthy relationships, major doctrinal deviations, and so on.

We all come from Egypt, a place of sin slavery. We all need multiple deserts to get Egypt out of our psycho-emotional root system. Some of the most destructive people in all of Christianity are not false prophets, but true Christian prophets who are unwilling to declare war on personal sin patterns. They possess a measure of prophetic grace that draws followers, yet they wind up damaging those very followers through their dysfunctions. They leave many wounded in their wake, hurting prophecy's cause and credibility as well. If you read David's psalms that he wrote while living in desert places, you will find him consistently mentioning personal sins, inner healing, breaking codependence, and so on.

The wilderness transforms character! The time is fading fast when low character prophets are allowed to minister publicly. Churches are tightening their grip on who holds the mic, being led by the Spirit to place a higher premium on character quality and soundness.

The wilderness destroys codependence

The Lord said in Jeremiah 17:5,6 that He uses the desert to deal with codependence, people-pleasing, and fear of man. Of all ministries, the prophetic is probably most easily polluted by codependence. Stories litter the Old Testament of false prophets telling people what they wanted to hear simply to gain their approval. They muddied the oracle of the Lord, prophesying from their imaginations and emotions.

Many, if not most, of our desert experiences pertain to people--their rejection, persecution, gossip, misunderstanding, non-spiritualness, indifference, mockery. God thrust us into this desert because we care too much! Oh how quickly our heat would turn to cool waters if we would only become de-peopled! We all have a human need to be loved and affimed by others. This is not wrong. This basic need morphs into a sinful obsession when our emotional wellness is tied to people and their reactions more than to God.

A prophesier must be so de-peopled that he senses a free-flowing confidence to be, say, and do whatever he needs. God will loose the desert dogs on us until we simply do not care anymore.

The wilderness creates individuation

One recurring problem I continually bump into is the lack of prophetic individuation. I weary of hearing uniform "prophetic words" that are not very prophetic. Rather, they are more of a regurgitation of the current spiritual fad. These "prophecies" are thoroughly unmoving, fail to bear witness within, and exploit the ideals of immature Christians. Sometimes I ask myself, "Does God not have more to say? Either He is not very relevant and original, or some of these prophesiers have a high flesh-mixture diluting or blocking the authentic word." I am well aware that God speaks thematically and consistently. Equally so, He speaks with uncanny relevance and uniqueness in different contexts. We need greater prophetic individuation.

Individuation means "the quality of being individual, distinct, unique, or original". The desert creates this individuation. Because the fervent heat melts away pretense, in-desert prophets are able to find their truest prophetic voices underneath the wanna-be facades. Those voices may have similarities to other prophets, but should also have noticeable uniqueness and innovation. What Moses discovered in the desert about his prophetic identity is quite different than what Elijah discovered. And David. And John. These prophets all emerged from the desert with some similarities, but also great individuality.

The wilderness intensifies anointing

The wilderness increases our prophetic power. As crucial transformations happen, the Spirit has more liberty to rest upon us in stronger measures. Check out the subtle symbolism in Song of Songs 3:6: Who is this coming up from the desert like a column of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and incense made from all the spices of the merchant? When Jesus came up from His desert experience, He was encompassed by the smoke of God's glory, perfumed with powerful anointing for ministry (Lk 4:1-19). Psalm 92:10 says something similar: ...fine oils have been poured upon me. This fresh oil of power came upon the psalmist because he battled his enemies and overcame (v11), he grew spiritually very much (v12), and he made God his intimate dwellingplace (v13).

We too increase in the power of the Spirit by being fully faithful to the desert developments. We will face our enemies and we must overcome them. We will be challenged to grow personally and we must swallow our pride and do so. Ultimately, we must plant ourselves in God and His presence. We must let the desert's fervent heat melt anything and everything in our life that keeps us from finding our all in all in Him and only Him. Then we will see Him increase His anointing portions upon our ministries.

Junior Desouza

The following word was prophesied on April 20, 2008, in Long Island, New York

"If you are afraid of losing your property, watch Me salvage it for you. There will be a strange move that will take place from your head office. They will say, 'Let us give this relief.'" And God said, "It will be so unusual the people shall say, 'This is crazy,'" but God said, "I'll give you a break and set you on a course. You won't have to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy; you'll file Hebrews Chapter 11 and join those in the hall of fame!

"Sing with the youth and with the sound that I'm bringing to this house. You say, 'We have youth, we have youth,' but now I will bring you the unruly youth. Sing with the youth.

"I'm bringing from the dungeons, I'm bringing from your caves, the potential kings of Israel. I'm bringing from your caves those that have played on their harp even in the presence of anger, even in the presence of hatred. I'm bringing from your caves the Davids of this hour who have been anointed to be the kings in the marketplace.

"Your sons and your daughters, your grandchildren who are now away, are about to return at the sound of the little piper. Your children shall come from the caves, unruly, but their heart remains un-rusted. For they have continually played and plucked the strings of that spiritual harp that was placed there when they stood as little children in the house, your children. This place shall become a place of habitation of young, unruly, wounded, young men, young women, teenagers." I see it, I see it. I saw it before, I see it again.

Look, the Cloud of Abundance is Already Here!

Bishop, you have many that come to your platform and prophesy. There are many that come with hogwash, but God says, "You have learned to wash away--you have learned to take the hosepipe" (garden hose). But God says now, "You have not sat back, you have dug ditches." You see, Elijah told the King of Judah and the King of Israel, "Go and dig holes in your valley of need and in your valley of want--just dig ditches."

They said, "Where will it come from? Where will the rain come from? Where shall it come from? Shall the rain come from the clouds? Shall it come from the wind?" No! That is too obvious. The same revivals will not bring the same harvest; the same style of revival shall not bring it. Elijah told the kings, "Go back to your valley of need where there is no water, and dig ditches and wait." They wondered what the strategy that was given would possibly do.

But they went and they obeyed the voice of God, as you did. And you began to dig ditches--you had nothing else you could do in preparation of something that you dreamed about and something that this house has made proclamation about. And yet, you've not seen a sign in the sky. "Where are those that I've asked to look for a cloud? Look, it's already there." The blindness has caused them to not see the cloud. For when Elijah went and spoke to his servant and said, "Go and look for a cloud, look for a sign." The reason he never saw the sign was because he was blinded by three and a half years of famine. Famine blinds you; need blinds you.

The cloud was already there. Because the prophet said, "I hear the sound not of a trickle, but I hear the sound of an abundance." Therefore the cloud must not be a small cloud. Nobody has seen the cloud, but it is in the sky. Nobody has seen it. And God said, "Once you get a glimpse of the cloud, run for your life, for acceleration shall begin from that point," says the Lord of Hosts.

Now you speak about abundance. You say, "Prophet, this is the wrong time to speak about abundance. This is the wrong time, don't you understand there is a recession?" "What did you say? You have slapped Me in the face! Do not speak what the news media say. I dare you to obey the Lord and speak what the prophets say: 'There is no recession!' Why? For in one day I can change everything," says the Lord.

"The abundance that I speak of will remove those who have stood in the way of My liberty, and said, 'We will not allow anyone else on this platform.' No, you do not tell Me who comes onto this platform," says the Spirit of God. You have dug ditches, you have dug ditches, you have dug big holes, your men have stayed with you. They've dug with you. What are you speaking about, Kim? "You have prepared yourself to contain the rain so when it comes it will never leave the valley and the place that I placed you in," says the Spirit of the Living God!

"Your Technology Shall be So Cutting Edge, Your Internet and Your Page Shall Explode!"

"The eyes of them that have been blinded," the Spirit of God says, "will be opened. Congregants and constituents that walked away and spat at you--and they did--shall come and they shall return. And they shall say, 'From the spit that was on the ground, may something be formed to open our eyes again, please.'"

For God said, "This I say to you today, for every mockery and everything that has been spoken and for the spittle that has gone onto the ground, I will take it and I will form it, and I will put it in their eyes and open the eyes of New York City, I will open the eyes of Long Island.

"I will open the eyes of every island," and God said, "You will say, 'What has happened?' For suddenly Elijah prophesied, 'Go back to your valley. Go back to your valley, dig holes and ditches, and wait.'" The Spirit of God said, "Suddenly, in the early hours of the morning from Edom, came water. An abundance shall come, not from the tithe of the Church, not from the offerings of the saints; it shall come from Edom, for I will unblock something and shall bring from the unholy places, and bring from the religious settings, and bring from New York City--even from beyond that place. You will say, 'Where? How?'"

God said, "I will bring, and they will come, and you will say, 'Everything has been paid off! Everything has been cleared up! We can build again, we can build again, we can build again, we can build again, yes!' Your children, the young men and women of this city, shall occupy this place!

Please do not take this lightly--and I know that you do not--for some begin to despise prophecy because it doesn't seem to unfold. "I've surrounded you with some very good people, but there are a few more to come. They will come, not from religious institutions, but they shall be taught by the ways of the world.

"Your technology shall be so cutting edge, your internet and your page shall explode. They will watch and they will say the people I'm giving you are innovative, creative, young men. They shall take this from a multi-million-dollar concern to a billion-dollar concern." Why? And people don't shout for that, because they don't like "billion" with "church." If we don't change our mind, we're going to stick back there with "million." You think a million's a lot?

God's changing our whole structure, our whole economy.

"There is an economy of grace. There's a whole new system that's been raised up," says the Spirit.

"A whole, brand new computer that has a speed greater than lightning. People shall say, 'No, this thing is evil.'" God says, "It's My doing! This computer and this whole technology shall reach the entire earth. Every being on the face of the earth shall be reached by this ludicrous--they call it ludicrous--speed. And it shall be possible for men and women in India, third world countries, to hear the Gospel in seconds!

"Out of New York and Seattle, Washington, this shall happen. I say this to you because I am going to give you and have given you young men and women that are so sharp, you will be one of the first to have this technology. You shall use it and change it to a multi-billion dollar concern. Why?" God said, "So that you will be able to fund, you will be able to give out, and as in the days of Moses, you will say to the people 'Stop giving, we have too much!'"

Can you imagine that? Stop giving, we have too much!

"And they have said, 'He will die before this.' Ha, My servants do not die so easily! For what you've dreamed about and what you've prayed about, what you've cried about, what you've had sorrow about shall change--not in the year 2008, the year 2009.

Spiritual Light Will Be Brought to Manhattan and Broadway

"You'll have a specific thing happen to your physical body that will change it. Why? Because," God says, "I'm going to prove that the change and the metamorphosis that takes place within the Kingdom shall take place with My servant, as well. And tears shall be turned into laughter and joy. Hardness shall be changed into a softness. And because you've remained pliable, the prophet is here not for anybody else but for you and your house this morning." That's why I brought my team to play along with me, because there's a march and an army that's going ahead of you, preparing the way.

"But there will be 19 buildings that shall be acquired--not on Long Island, but," God said, "within Manhattan as well as other places, for the purpose of displaying My themes through various plays and dramas and broadcasts. A whole, brand new line shall enter Broadway, which shall bring spiritual light and spiritual influence into a region that is controlled and held in bondage," says the Lord! "Do you see the light? Do you see the light? Do you see the light?

"I want Broadway to be spiritually inflamed. You need properties--19 properties." When God speaks a word, somebody has to go fight. There's a fight going on, a fight for the life of the city. This is going to be a youth emporium. You are going to be in the city. He's prepared you, you've practiced, and you've practiced, and you've prepared yourself--for what? For the marketplace.

Now you are absolutely responsible to pray with, support, and stand behind what is about to take place. In that city and in Manhattan and in all those territories, there are young men and women who are crying out to be a part of this great maneuver.

God, You are so crafty, You go ahead and maneuver us right in there; provide the buildings, provide the space, provide the staff, provide the expertise, provide the equipment--let's go in and turn it upside down in a covert manner, that they won't realize that these are sheep dressed up as wolves that are coming in to snatch them out of darkness and bring them into the glorious light!

All of these leaders in front and standing on the platform, pray for them right now. I've come for you. My mandate is: "What do you want to do; what do you want me to do to prepare the way?" He's been digging ditches. What does that mean? So that when the water comes from Edom--not from some revival that will be contained--your enemies will see it as blood and be confounded and run away. That's the word of the Lord. You won't have to fight this time; the fight is in the containing of the abundance that God is bringing.

The Sources of Energy are About to be Released

To the man in the suit: "The industry that I am bringing upon many men and women in technology shall change the world. Don't give up, a dream is a dream that does become reality. The future is the future, but it does become the present. At some time, Christ moved from being a future being to becoming a present being. And most people didn't accept Him and are still looking out for Him. Your future is becoming the present right now. Take it, no matter how stupid it may seem, no matter what people say, you got it; fight with it, run with it. The sources of energy that are about to be released," God said, "I'm going to make billionaires out of My people because they're going to have an insight to what's going on and have wisdom."

I get scientists writing to me, "Tell us more about the vision that you've had," and God stops me and says, "You cannot share it before its time, because there are greedy men. But there are also righteous men, and I will do it at the right time and help them."

Your Place of Pain Will Become Your Place of Reign

Lord, these that have served, that have held, that have stood through the test of time--some of them still do. Honor them. Some of them have had heartbreak and family breakups; it doesn't matter, you have fought through. You've come back, and because of that...now I want to remind you of something that God said to Jacob. I preached it on this platform six years ago. Jacob laid his head down on a rock, on a stone in a place called Luz. He was running away, he had nothing, he was in a place of pain.

As he fell asleep, God spoke to him, opened up the Heavens and said, "You are going to touch multitudes. Out of you a nation is going to be born. You will bless the north, the south, the east and the west. In you will the blessing come out." Jacob woke up in the same mess, in the same place, but his perception had changed. He said, "How awesome is this place of pain. It is no longer a place of pain, but it is a place of reign. I'm going to take the same place that caused me pain and turn it into a place of reign."

God doesn't get you out of the mess, He transforms the mess. And you may be in a mess today, and God's going to transform you in that mess. Don't ask to get out of it; be transformed and change it into a place of reign so you can do something with it!

Jacob took a stone--and he has no money, he had nothing. He said, "God is in this place and I never knew it. Now I can see it, so I'm going to offer an offering to Him." He takes a stone--that's all he's got--and he offers it to the Lord. And he says, "This stone is going to become my pillar." That's the word of the Lord for your servants and for your associates and for men and women of God.

You that have been stoned, God is pouring an oil on you to become pillars. You thought you were a pillar. You are now so strong--I don't want to use the word, but the word "fused" has come to me. There's no way out, John, there's no way out. Sammy, there's no way out. Georgina, there's no way out. You are now pillars. So, I thought I was a pillar. Now you are a God-pillar.

Twenty years later, after Jacob's gone and he's met his wives and been through a whole lot of trouble, God approaches him and says, "I want to make you the wealthiest man on the earth." He says, "I want you to do something," and He gives him an idea to take a poplar tree branch and to strip it, cut it, and place it in front of the stock so that they produce exactly what they need to produce so that he can make a whole lot of money.

So, he becomes the wealthiest man, but this is how God introduces him: He says to him, "I am the God that met you on your way, the God whom you offered a stone and a pillar." God took that and said, "What you gave Me in your place of pain, now I'm remembering just that. The God who received your offering as a stone that became a pillar--I'm now giving you access to a whole new dimension of prosperity."

Now that could be spiritual, it could be--God will give you ideas, and all of you in front need to be innovative, to be creative. Because what's going to happen is God's going to give you dreams and visions and ideas. Use them, present them, start a committee, if you wish, that will sit down, because what's about to happen is so big that it's blowing me up. I feel like I'm gonna explode. I've got to get out of here as soon as I can. You are causing me to want to explode, because your faith has suddenly connected with my prophetic word; I can feel it inside of you.

The Impartable Anointing

Awesome things are happening in these days of visitation. Revival fire has ignited in Lakeland, Florida, and has exploded into multiple thousands of people gathering each night in stadiums and arenas receiving healings, miracles and fresh fire from Heaven. Many from all over the world are being ignited with a fresh anointing of grace and taking the revival fire back to their homes and churches.

Much has been said about the "contagious" and "impartable" nature of the revival fire breaking out in Florida and other places, making these truly exciting times to be alive. Since there are some valuable lessons we can learn from some of the recent predecessors of this current outpouring, that will help us rightly respond to these current events, I pulled together what I am calling "chronicles of revival" from events I personally experienced and first person accounts I have heard from some of the primary people involved with the progression of revival over the last 20 years.

But long before there was the "Toronto Blessing" or the "Brownsville Revival" we see a story that exemplifies the reality of chasing mantles and catching anointings right from the Scriptures. The story is from 2 Kings 2:1-2; 9-15 and is about Elijah and Elisha:

"And it came to pass, when the LORD was about to take up Elijah into Heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. Then Elijah said to Elisha, 'Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.' But Elisha said, 'As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!' So they went down to Bethel...

"And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?' Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.' So he said, 'You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.' Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into Heaven.

"And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, 'My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

"Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, 'Where is the LORD God of Elijah?' And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over. Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, 'The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.' And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him."

The lesson is obvious: Elisha pressed in and received not just the same anointing Elijah carried, but in fact, a double portion of the anointing his mentor had.

The History Behind Current Lakeland, Florida, Outpourings

The story of this current outpouring can actually be traced back 20 years ago to an obscure Bible College teacher in South Africa who felt called of God to surrender his life to become a missionary to America. His name was Rodney Howard-Browne.

He arrived in the USA in 1988 and started traveling as an evangelist preaching the Gospel. One of the earmarks of his life and his message was a deep and unquenchable hunger for God and the power of His Spirit. By the early 90's he began to experience an unusual level of anointing on his ministry and people began to receive powerful touches of refreshing and joy in his meetings, as well as healings and other miracles.

By 1993, he was gaining attention by what God was doing in his meetings; and in a series of meetings he held in Lakeland, Florida, there was such a powerful move that he went into extended meetings where thousands of people began to come and receive a fresh touch from God.

The Buzz in 1993 Concerning Lakeland Revival Meetings

During that time, I was pastoring a church in the Florida Panhandle, and I remember all the buzz about the meetings. A number of people I knew flew in from across the USA to Florida to receive a fresh empowerment from Heaven. I also remember, to my chagrin, the thoughts that passed through my mind at the time, about how I had God in my life, and I had an anointing on what I was doing, and I certainly did not need to travel anywhere to chase after "more of God." (I was soon to radically change my mind on those issues.)

Not everyone held my opinion on the matter, and during those days in 1993, there was a certain burned-out Vineyard pastor in St. Louis, Missouri, who had, himself, seen seasons of visitation and healing in his past; he was so hungry to experience it again, that he chased Rodney Howard-Browne down and attended some meetings he was holding in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That man was Randy Clark. By his own admission, he tells about how he got into the prayer line for "impartation" five times in one night just because he was so hungry for more of God and His power in his life.

Randy left those meetings changed forever. He was healed of a nervous condition that had been plaguing him for a while, but more significantly, when he got home he discovered a whole new level of grace and anointing in his ministry. Randy has gone on since then to build an international, apostolic ministry that is touching nations with healing and impartation of revival fire.

Not long after that, another hungry Vineyard pastor named John Arnott heard of what had happened in Randy's life and invited him to come and do four nights of meetings at his church in Toronto, Canada, in the cold and snowy January of 1994. What happened next certainly changed my mind about the impartation and transferability of anointings and mantles. But way beyond that, it has had major impact on the Church worldwide. The impact felt from the visitation of God that occurred at the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship is with us to this day, and there is much we can learn from it.

Hungry for MORE!

"O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips." Psalm 63:1-5

God will accommodate the hungry with revival. Not long after Randy Clark received a fresh impartation at Rodney Howard-Browne's meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, another hungry Vineyard pastor named John Arnott invited him to his church in Toronto, Canada. When the meetings began on a cold Thursday night in January, there were about 120 people in attendance. But God showed up in a powerful way, and what was intended to be four nights of meetings quickly blossomed into extended meetings.

John convinced Randy to stay on to help, and the meetings grew in intensity and in numbers. It seemed like overnight word got around that there was an unusual visitation of God, and the hungry began to come from throughout the USA and Canada--then came the nations. Nightly meetings extended week after week, then month after month. The hungry kept coming, catching the fire, and taking it back with them to their homes and churches in nations all over the world. At one point, they said there were over 6,000 churches experiencing the outpouring in just England alone.

My first knowledge of the outpouring came in the Spring of that year (1994) when a friend named Steve Witt, who himself was a Vineyard pastor in eastern Canada, began to tell me stories of how he took a team from his church to the Toronto meetings. And when they got back to his church in New Brunswick, his church caught ablaze and was experiencing the same powerful visitation from God, with the accompanying signs and wonders.

Suddenly I got hungry. We immediately set up a series of meetings for Steve and his team to come to our rural church in the Florida Panhandle. They came, and sure enough, the same thing happened in our congregation. And my hunger became insatiable. I wanted MORE! So off I went with numerous visits over the next six months to Toronto, to Rodney Howard-Browne meetings, to Randy Clark conferences, etc., as did thousands and thousands of people over the next several years. Our small, rural church of 120 people caught the fire as well. We doubled in size over the next three years (but that is a different story).

The Toronto meetings grew from hundreds to thousands, and the fire spread. Healings and miracles were taking place, and people continued to be powerfully touched by the love of God and His presence. This truly was an impartable and contagious anointing. Smaller versions of the same outpouring began to occur in churches all over the world. One such place was an Anglican church in England called Holy Trinity--Brompton.

There was another church in the sleepy, gulf coast town of Pensacola, Florida, who had not heard of the Toronto outpouring at this point. But they were hungry for revival to such a degree that they had set Sunday nights aside for a solid two years just to pray for revival. After two full years of praying for revival at the Brownsville Assembly of God, some of the core staff heard about and decided to go check out the Toronto meetings, and they took a trip up in the Spring of 1995. They came home more hungry than ever for revival fire. Part of the group was the pastor's wife, Brenda Kilpatrick, and worship leader Lindell Cooley.

While that was going on, a friend of Brownsville pastor John Kilpatrick, who was a traveling evangelist named Steve Hill with the Assemblies of God denomination, had heard of what was happening at Holy Trinity Church in England. In one of his trips abroad he stopped into the church and talked to the vicar there, named Sandy Miller, and received prayer and a fresh impartation of fire for himself and his ministry.

In one of those divinely orchestrated events, it turned out that the Brownsville Pastor, John Kilpatrick, decided to invite evangelist Steve Hill to preach at his church on Father's Day Sunday in the Summer of 1995. It was like a match hitting gasoline. They exploded into nightly meetings, and suddenly this large, respectable Assembly of God church in Pensacola, Florida, became another hot spot for revival, as God poured out another powerful demonstration of His power and presence in that place.

Revival Phenomena

"Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles." Acts 2:43

Through the mid to late 90's there were revival "hotspots" burning all over the world, the most prominent of which was the "Toronto Blessing" and the "Brownsville Revival" in Pensacola, Florida. People were being saved, healed, delivered, encouraged, strengthened and refreshed. But it was not without controversy. Many signs and wonders were happening, and that alone received lots of attention. Much of the controversy centered on the signs and wonders "phenomena."

Common to many of these meetings, were people roaring and groaning, falling and shaking, and people wondered. One friend of mine astutely commented, "Of course, a sign is designed to make you wonder." Hmm...a common bush in the desert would not have captured Moses' attention. But a bush that was on fire but not consumed, made him wonder and caused him to turn aside to see what it was. So is the effect of the unusual signs of revival.

A "sign" is an abnormal, unusual attention-getter, designed to point to something. Where I lived for a while in Northwest Florida, there were lots and lots of trees. In fact, I lived in the midst of miles and miles of pine forests. If I were to tell someone to drive down the road for a few miles until they saw the pine tree on the left and turn there, they would most certainly become lost, since there are hundreds of pines, all looking pretty much the same. If, on the other hand, I said, "Look for the pine tree that has been sawed into planks, nailed together, painted white, and has an arrow on it pointing left" (i.e. a sign), it would be much easier to find the destination the sign points to.

The fact is, a sign is simply that--an unusual "something" that gets our attention. A sign is of necessity an unusual, abnormal phenomenon, otherwise it would not serve its purpose. The validity of the sign is found in not what the sign is, but what the sign points to. The sign phenomena itself cannot be the solo criteria by which we judge whether it is divine or counterfeit. A sign is meant to point to something--WHAT it points to makes all the difference.

The Sign Should Point to Jesus

And that leads to another principle. The sign is not the destination, but points us to the destination. Which, in all cases, should be Jesus. THAT is the criteria by which to judge. The accuracy of a word, validity of a sign or anything else is not measured by whether it is an authentic or supernatural miracle, but rather, if it glorifies Jesus. In the meetings being described, is the name of Jesus being lifted up? Is the Gospel being preached? Are people being provoked to deeper devotion to Jesus? Are they recovering their first love for the Lord? These are the real criteria.

In Rodney Howard-Browne's meetings there was overwhelming joy and laughter. In Toronto, people shook and fell, or broke into what some called "exotic prophetic manifestations." Similar things happened at Brownsville. And people wondered.

But this kind of phenomena is not new to revival. One reporter observed about the famous Cane Ridge Revival in the 1800's that the scene looked more like a battlefield than an outdoor meeting--with people strewn all over the countryside and laid out under the power of God's presence. But history tells us that the Cane Ridge Revival had a significant and positive effect on the morality of the nation.

The Fruit Speaks for Itself

Of course, throughout Scripture there were occasions where the powerful presence of God caused people to fall under the presence of His glory. One clear example is in 2 Chronicles 5:13-14:

"...in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice accompanied by trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and when they praised the LORD saying, 'He indeed is good for His lovingkindness is everlasting,' then the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God." (See also Genesis 17:17; 2 Chronicles 7:1-2; Numbers 22:31; Daniel 8:17,18; Acts 9:3-6.)

So the fruit speaks for itself. I knew a teenage girl whose mother attended our local church. She visited the Brownsville Revival one night, more out of curiosity than anything else. While there, she received prayer, fell down, then levitated about six inches off the floor while she was being delivered from demons. Needless to say, she was changed forever. And so was about half our youth group who was there and saw it.

John Arnott, the pastor at Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship, gave an interesting response when challenged about the shaking and quaking that often happened to people who received prayer in their meetings. Someone asked, "What if it is a demon?" To which he replied, "Even if it was a demon, the more important question is whether the demon was coming or leaving." It is in the overwhelmingly convincing results of the encounters people experienced in these meetings, that the answer was found. They consistently left more in love with Jesus, more passionate for God, more refreshed, encouraged and empowered for ministry. As John also commented, "Why would the devil want to do that?"

One such case was a certain tired, sick and discouraged woman who had been on the mission field in Africa for many years with little fruit. She went to the meetings in Toronto, was prayed for by Randy Clark, and fell down in a pile on the floor. She was so overwhelmed by the power and presence of God that she could hardly talk and was unable to walk for a week, or even get to and from the meetings without help.

After her week of power encounter, Heidi Baker returned to the mission field with a fresh empowerment from the Holy Spirit--and since then she and her husband Roland have set Africa on fire, planting somewhere close to 10,000 churches. They have seen many significant healings and miracles, including a number of resurrections from the dead, multiplications of food, and other notable miracles.

Another minister who was powerfully touched by the Toronto Revival was a woman who already had an effective ministry in Western Canada during that time. As a prophetic visionary and effective author and teacher, she took what she received and began to train people to experience their own ongoing personal revival through her "Glory Schools" and other seminars and materials. Her name was Patricia King.

Catching the Fire and Giving it Away

The revival at the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship had some distinctive aspects to it. One of the significant aspects of what happened there (in this writer's opinion), was that it was not so much "personality based" as it was "presence of God" based. The amazing feature of this outpouring of the Holy Spirit was that the power and presence of God was there night after night, regardless of who was speaking, who was leading worship and what else was happening.

The "felt" love of God and intimacy with Him were the biggest features, although there were plenty of salvations, healings, prophetic ministry, excellent teaching and so on.

Many people acknowledge the Toronto Outpouring as a significant benchmark of revival for this generation. Through the wise apostolic leadership of John Arnott, the revival that happened there was stewarded and administrated in such a way that there has been an establishment of ongoing fruit. Many current ministries also trace their release into new levels of effectiveness to the fresh anointing they received from the Toronto Revival. One of those ministries was that of Patricia King.

Patricia became a "carrier" of the "renewal anointing" and took it back to her spheres of ministry in western Canada. It was there, during the late 90's, that she was in a meeting where she prophetically identified and called out a young man named Todd Bentley to launch out into an evangelistic ministry, and prophetically "commissioned" him into a ministry of signs, wonders and miracles.

Todd grabbed the mantle and ran with it. The next ten years saw growth in his effectiveness as an evangelist and healing minister, but also some grueling dealings with God, as God prepared the vessel--as He so adequately and lovingly does.

It was 10 years later, in the beginning of 2008 (February 20-23), that Patricia King invited Todd to be a keynote speaker at an "Extreme Prophetic" conference she held in Phoenix, Arizona, called "Raising the Dead." That conference turned out to be a significant milestone in the ongoing chronicles of revival.

A man named Denny Cline, Pastor of the Vineyard Church in Albany, Oregon, who had been a friend to Todd and had hosted meetings with Todd in the past, came to the conference on a prophetic mission. He came with the sole agenda of proclaiming to Todd that there were new angelic hosts being assigned to Todd and his ministry to assist in a new wave of healing and revival fire.

A Dawning of a New Day

It was on one of the last nights of that conference that a prolonged and holy silence settled in upon the meeting at the end of a time of worship. After a long pause, a prophetic word came forth over the meeting, declaring the following: "For those in this place who sense that you have crossed over a new threshold, the Lord declares,

'Surely you HAVE crossed over a new threshold and have, as it were, turned the corner into a new day, says the Lord. For surely this is a new day, not only for you, but also for the entire Body of Christ. And even as there have been times in which historians looked back and said, "That was the dawning of a new day for the Church," even so, those with spiritual perception will look back upon these meetings and this time as the time when a new day dawned and a new level of breakthrough occurred for the Body of Christ.'"

A few short weeks later, Todd began what was supposed to be a short series of meetings in Lakeland, Florida. They began with about 700 in attendance, but God poured out a glorious gusher of His glory and healing power, and the crowds quickly swelled into thousands. Many signs and wonders and dramatic miracles are taking place.

As of the time of this writing, there have been 12 reports of RESURRECTIONS FROM THE DEAD. Many are heralding this as the often-prophesied and long-awaited beginning of an end time harvest that will spread to arenas and stadiums all over the world.

Once again, there is a tangible and transferable anointing of power and glory that is spreading to revival hotspots all over the world. And with the Divine providence of a prophetically sensitive satellite TV station--GOD TV, founded by Wendy and Rory Alec--broadcasting the meetings over much of the world, along with the advance of internet technology, there is a rapid spread of the knowledge of this outpouring that has resulted in thousands of saints and leaders converging from all over the world to catch the fire and then take it back and give it away.

As exciting as it is that there is a portal of open heavens occurring in Lakeland, Florida, even more exciting is the fact that it is contagious and transferable and available wherever hungry believers are crying out for more of God's revelation, power and presence. These are truly wondrous days of glory and grace.
